Romance and Culture in Gangneung

-Tickets for the Gwandong Pungnyu Train and Moonlight Visit to the Seongyojang House made available on Interpark at 2 p.m. on April 24 (Wed.) -

The 2024 Visit Korean Heritage Campaign, a joint initiative of the Cultural Heritage Administration (Administrator Choi Eung-chon) and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation (Chairman Choi Young-chang), will present two special programs in Gangneung, Gangwon-do Province, from May 10 to 19, which will follow the path of the Gwandong Korean Elegance Route.

The Visit Korean Heritage Campaign is a branding project to rediscover the value of national heritage, the root of the Korean wave (Hallyu), which has garnered worldwide attention, and to showcase its beauty at home and abroad. The campaign aims to promote the National Heritage Tour Itineraries, which consist of 10 routes and 76 bases, internationally.

The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation is hosting two programs centered on Gangwon-do Province, which is included in one of the National Heritage Tour Itineraries, . The route includes six sites in the Gangwon-do region, which is known for the breathtaking scenery of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range and the East Sea, and the sites are Ojukheon House, Gyeongpodae Pavilion, Naksansa Temple in Yangyang, Sinheungsa Temple in Sokcho, and Woljeongsa Temple in Pyeongchang.

The Gwandong Pungnyu Train and Moonlight Visit to the Seongyojang House programs, which have attracted a great deal of attention since their launch in 2022, will run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from May 10 to 19, for a total of six days.

See the Stories of the Eight Scenic Sites of Gwandong Unfold Before Your Eyes in the Gwandong Pungnyu Train

The Gwandong Pungnyu Train is a program that takes passengers on a train ride with a narrator dressed as Kim Geum-won, a Joseon woman poet from Wonju. Departing from Gangneung, the train passes through Donghae and arrives in Samcheok. It is operated once a day (departing from Gangneung Station at 10:14 a.m.), with up to 40 passengers per trip. This year, due to the end of the operation of the sea train used in previous years, the program will be operated on the Santa Train. Also, unlike previous years, the program has been enhanced by adding a short stop at Jeongdongjin Station so that visitors can enjoy an ocean view in early summer at their leisure. Chuam Chotdaebawi Rock has also been added to the program for visitors to enjoy more of the scenic spots of Gwandong with their own eyes.

Enjoy a Moonlight Walk at Seongyojang House and in the Pine Grove Through a Moonlight Visit to the Seongyojang House

The Moonlight Visit to the Seongyojang House is a program where participants get to enjoy a nighttime walk through Seongyojang, a traditional house representing Gangneung. With a total of 540 participants, the Moonlight Visit to the Seongyojang House will take place 18 times during the event period, with three tours per day (7:30pm, 7:50pm, and 8:10pm).

Visitors will be able to explore various parts of the house, including Wolhamun Gate, Hwallaejeong Pavilion, and Yeolhwadang Hall with a guide telling them a variety of fascinating national heritage stories. At Yeolhwadang, visitors can enjoy a cup of hot tea and watch a traditional art performance. This year, one of the tour paths has been changed from Baekho-gil to Cheongnyong-gil. The tour ends with a nighttime walk along Cheongnyong-gil surrounded by lush pines to savor the unique nighttime atmosphere of the Seongyojang House.

Both the Gwandong Pungnyu Train and the Moonlight Visit to the Seongyojang House will present the stunning scenery and culture of Gangwon-do Province. The programs can be booked on a first-come, first-served basis on Interpark starting at 2 p.m. on April 24, and the ticket costs 10,000 won per person. For more information on the Gwandong Korean Elegance Route, go to the website (chf.or.kr/visit) or the official Instagram account (@visitkoreanheritage) for the Visit Korean Heritage Campaign.

On May 17, the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation will be rebranded as the National Heritage Institute with the Framework Act on National Heritage coming into effect.
