Gangneung’s Changkyungbari Fishery Designated as Province’s First Nationally Important Fishery Heritage

- Expectations for efficient preservation of traditional fishery resources and revitalization of fishing village economies through tourism -

The traditional fishery resource of the Gangneung region 「Gangneung Changkyungbari Fishery」passed its final evaluation on November 29 (Friday), and was designated as Gangwon province’s first nationally important fishery heritage.

Gangneung Changkyungbari fishery was designated as a nationally important fishery heritage after a written evaluation and on-site evaluation, and during the final evaluation more than two-thirds of the Fishery Heritage Advisory Committee deemed it eligible, leading to its official designation as Nationally Important Fishery Heritage.

Changkyungbari fishery employs an eco-friendly method that involves harvesting marine products like seaweed using a changkyung and other tools on a ttebae (traditional raft) or jeonmaseon (small fishing boat), with the term ‘changkyung’ itself meaning ‘looking into the water like a mirror through a glass window’. While typically a trapezoidal shaped object with a glass bottom and an open top, its structure and size can vary by user.

Changkungbari fishery was prevalent in the Gangwon region until the 1970s, but is now collectively practiced in a traditional manner only in the Gangdong-myeong area of Gangneung City.

Including Gangneung’s Changkungbari fishery, there are a total of 16 nationally important fishery heritage designations.

A Gangneung City official said, “We hope that this designation of nationally important fishery heritage will serve as an opportunity for the systematic preservation and succession of traditional fishery resources, as well as increasing visitors to fishing villages and revitalizing the fishing economy.”
