[Gangneung] Gangneung City is stepping up its efforts to become one of the world’s top 100 tourist cities.

To this end, the city is focusing its administrative power to build stay-and-experience tourism infrastructure and be selected as a nighttime tourism city.

First, to attract long-term tourists, the city is planning to build large international-level accommodation facilities, including Gangneung the Ocean 259 (1,098 rooms), Gyeongpo Olympic County (581 rooms), Lagoon Town (757 rooms), Jumunjin Comprehensive Accommodation Facility I (718 rooms), and Jumunjin Comprehensive Accommodation Facility II (830 rooms), and undertake the development of a tourism complex in the southern part of the city (1,250 rooms).

There are plans to build infrastructure for experiential travel by pursuing balanced tourism content development of each of the four areas of the city, with the establishment of the Hyangho National and Regional Garden, Marine Tourism Ocean Park, and a cable car in the northern area (Sodol Port and Jumunjin Port) by 2027.

As for the southern area, the city is aiming to establish the Unification Park, Anbo (Security) Trail Comprehensive Tourism Complex, Jeongdong Sea-Tea Beach Train, and National Forest Sports Center by 2026, while a cable car (Gangneung to Pyeongchang) is set to be established in the western area by 2027. In the city center, development projects for the Ohjukheon Traditional Boating (Park Golf Course), Gyeongpo Fountain Show, Moonlight Art Show, Phantom Lake, Moonlight Lake Garden, Gyeongpo Coastal Green Axis Park, and Anmok Jukdobong Sky Valley are set to be completed by 2025.

A city official said, “In order to be selected as a nighttime tourism city, we are focusing on installing additional night scenery lighting for the Wolhwagyo Bridge Fountain Show, Solhyang Arboretum, Gyeongpo Lake, and Ojukheon and opening and promoting the Wolhwa Street Night Market.”
