강릉시립미술관 기획전시 《춤, 흐르는 물결, 일렁이는 마음, 꿈꾸는 표류(Dance, Flowing Waves, Drifting Hearts, and Dreaming Journeys)》 강릉시립미술관은 2024년 기획전시 《춤, 흐르는 물결, 일렁이는 마음, 꿈꾸는 표류》를 개최합니다. 전시 참여작가 김선우(1988~)는 개인전 24회(가나아트센터 등), 단체전 70회(양주시립장욱진미술관 등), 각종 수상 11회(국립현대미술관 등), 국제 레지던시 참여(미국, 프랑스, 일본 등) 및 다수의 프로젝트(서울시, 불가리, 스타벅스 등)를 했습니다. “도도새” 작가는 대학 시절 ‘새의 머리를 가진 사람들’을 그렸습니다. 날개를 잃어버리고 갇힌 새의 모습을 통해 개체화, 몰개성화된 현대인의 모습을 비유했던 것입니다. 여행을 통해 작품 영감을 얻곤 했던 작가는 도도새의 옛 서식지, 인도양 작은 섬 모리셔스에 직접 방문합니다. 도도새는 본래 날 수 있었지만 천적 없는 안락한 환경에 안주하여 날기를 포기하고 걸었습니다. 시간이 흘러 더 이상 날 수 없게 된 도도새는 결국 섬에 들어온 인간에 의해 1681년 멸종합니다. 작가는 이 도도새를 소재로 한 회화 작품을 통해 꿈, 이상, 자유를 이야기합니다. “춤” 본 전시 주제는 ‘춤’입니다. 작가는 우리가 인생을 살아가는 모습이 자신만의 춤을 완성시켜 나가는 과정과 같다고 생각합니다. 누구나 각자의 춤을 추며 살아가는 인생을 지극히 예술가의 시선으로 바라보며 그림으로 이야기합니다. 그 안에는 현실과의 타협 속에서 자신만의 고유한 춤을 잃어버리지 않기를 바라는 작가의 격려가 고스란히 담겨있습니다. "물론 여전히 지금도 종종 스텝이 꼬이고, 누군가의 발(혹은 자신의 발)을 밟기도 일쑤지만, 그림을 그리는 일은 저에게 가장 소중한 춤의 메타포이자 제가 가장 잘 출 수 있고, 앞으로도 더 잘 추고 싶은 종류의 ‘춤’입니다." - 작가 노트 중에서 - 작품에 자주 등장하는 ‘별’에는 작가가 전하는 꿈이 담겨있습니다. 비록 도도새는 지구별을 영원히 떠났지만, 작품 속 은하수 물결 위에 비친 반짝이는 별과 함께 우리 곁으로 다시 돌아왔습니다. 부디 당신의 도도새는 실수해도 용기 내어 한 걸음 나아가시기를, 오늘도 내일도 비행하시기를, 무한한 가능성 안에서 한없이 자유롭게 춤추시기를 응원합니다. Special Exhibition at the Gangneung Museum of Art 《Dance, Flowing Waves, Drifting Hearts, and Dreaming Journeys》 The Gangneung Museum of Art is hosting the special exhibition “Dance, Flowing Waves, Drifting Hearts, and Dreaming Journeys” in 2024. Participating artist Kim Sun-woo (1988~) has held 24 solo exhibitions (including at the Gana Art Center) and participated in 70 group exhibitions (such as at the Chang Ucchin Museum of Art Yangju City). He has received 11 awards (including from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) and has taken part in international residencies (in the United State, France, Japan, and more). In addition, he has been involved in numerous projects with organizations such as the Seoul City, Bulgari, and Starbucks. “Dodo Bird” As a university student, the artist painted “people with the heads of birds.” By depicting birds that had lost their wings and were trapped, he symbolized the individuation and dehumanization of modern society. Seeking inspiration through travel, the artist visited Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, once the habitat of Dodo bird. Dodo, originally capable of flight, abandoned this ability and adapted to walking because of the lack of predators in its comfortable environment. Over time, Dodo lost its ability to fly entirely and eventually became extinct in 1681 because of human activities on the island. Through his paintings of Dodo bird, the artist explores themes of dreams, ideals, and freedom. “Dance” The theme of this exhibition is “Dance.” The artist believes that living life is like perfecting one’s unique dance. Everyone lives their life dancing their own dance, and the artist views this from a distinctly artistic perspective, telling this story through his paintings. Within these works lies the artist’s encouragement to never lose one’s unique dance amid the compromises of reality. Of course, I still often stumble and step on someone’s feet (or my own), but for me, painting is the most precious metaphor for dance. It is the dance I can perform best and the one I aspire to master. - From the Artist’s Note - The stars that frequently appear in his works carry the dreams the artist wishes to convey. Although Dodo bird has left this Earth forever, in his paintings, it returns to us, reflected in the shimmering stars over the Milky Way. May your Dodo, even if it makes mistakes, have the courage to take one more step forward, to fly today and tomorrow, and to dance freely within infinite possibilities.
